Leaning Post was started in 2011 by husband and wife Ilya & Nadia Senchuk on 11 acres of land. What was then an abandoned winery has been rejuvenated into an award-winning winery in the Peninsula VQA.
Their flagship chardonnay and a variety of small parcel pinot noirs are widely available across the province. A new shipment of the Winona for the 2022 cuvee variation, with what appears to be half the stock of the 600 cases produced, was purchased for LCBO retail stores. A perfect deflection to the north-west of the French winemaking style in Bordeaux.
This wine reminds me of the Right Bank of Bordeaux, the side of the Gironde River that flows through the region. The left side is cabernet sauvignon-dominant with gravelly soil and tannic. The Right Bank is merlot-dominant with clay and limestone soil (usually more approachable varieties).
This cuvée brings forth the notion of “what grows together goes together.” Fresh cherries, a staple of the Niagara region, are present in the bouquet. On the palate, dark cherries, cassis, baking spices from its dormancy in oak and forest floor from a bit of age.
With medium tannins and dark fruit notes, this would go well with a rack of lamb, or perfect to compliment a juicy roast chicken with root vegetables.
While this wine shows some potential, it lacks in the Right Bank finesse. The boxes are checked for aroma and flavour, but the body is not yet bringing me back this grape blend’s roots in France.
2.5/5 bottles in the cellar
